Pecten are a genus of bivalve saltwater clams belonging to the family of Pectinidae, the scallops. They are known from the Cretaceous period onwards to this day. They live in marine waters all over the worldThere are nearly 500 different recent species known, divided over 4 families. They all conform to a general pattern of 2 valves, with almost round outer rim and radiating ribs over their surface. Of the two valves one may be flat, the other concave, but often both are more or less rounded. Also typical are the two 'ears' on each side of the shell's umbo. The shells in this example are so arranged as a decorative object.
