Lindbergh and 'Spirit of St Louis'. US aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974) shaking hands with a military official next to the 'Spirit of St Louis', the aeroplane in which he made the first solo transatlantic flight. This flight took place in May 1927. Lindbergh took off near New York, USA, and flew for over 33 hours to reach Paris, France, over 5700 kilometres away. Spirit of St Louis, a steel monoplane built by Ryan Airlines, was metres long with a wingspan of 14 metres. Lindbergh achieved overnight world-wide fame and several publicity tours followed that year and the next. This photograph, from 1927 or 1928, is from the Harris and Ewing collection.
