This is a source of greatdanger to its dykes, and even if they do not break they are likely tobe badly damaged, and a great quantity of silt is deposited whichnecessitates the dredging of the channel I which is never done), orthe increasing of the height of the dykes (which is sometimes done). * f ? FAMINE RFLIEF WOUK As a matter of fact nothing is usually done until a serious breakoccurs in the dykes, much damage is done to the low ( Hia) country, and valuable crops are lost with some lives, and then the repairs aremade in a weak, cheap, temporary manner at a tremendous proper outlets the flood level would be lowered, the length ofduration of the floods reduced, the land drained, and the danger anddamage to the canal reduced to a minimum. As has been before stated, the land on the east of the canal ismuch lower than that on the west, from the Yang-tsze River to 14 Thsing Kiang-pu, and north from Thsing Kiang-pu to about cause of this is that during the centuries in which the canal hasbeen in existence it has acted as a dam to the waters coming from thenorth-west, and consequently the greater part of the silt broughtdown by these floods has deposit
