Black and White Illustration; Opening of Edward the Confessor's Tomb circa 1269


St Edward the Confessor Thirty-six years after his death in 1066, Edward the Confessor’s body was found to be incorrupt. In 1163, the king was exhumed again and the body was still incorrupt. This illustration shows the 1163 exhumation with King Henry II kissing the corpse as it is transferred to a new shrine. In a third exhumation in 1269, only a skeleton was found.
