Cell cultures in sample trays. The cells are implanted in a gel medium (pink) which provides all the nutrients necessary for optimum cell growth. The trays will be placed in an incubator, to encourage the cells to grow and multiply. Cell cultures are used in the laboratory to study cell growth and to test the effects of substances such as drugs, on the cells. A wide range of cells are grown and studied in this manner, including cancer cells and stem cells. Photographed at the Leiden University Medical Centre, Netherlands.
