Material Survey Department Hard-Surfaced Roads At the beginning of the new hard-surface program it was realized thatthe demand by contractors for information regarding available materialswould be tremendous and it was also necessary that local materials beused as much as possible for economic reasons. Accordingly, materialsurvey parties were sent into the field to locate and sample all depositsof local materials within economic hauling distance of each project. Thedepartment has made material surveys of 116 projects. Samples of stoneand sand were taken from each deposit and submitted to the concrete orchemical laboratory for tests. The findings of this department, coupledwith the test results of the laboratories are available in convenient formfor prospective bidders and have been of valuable assistance to them aswell as directly being responsible for lowering the cost of the work. Of the 116 projects surveyed about 20% are using local stone and about75% are using local sand to a greater or lesser degree, depending on thequality and quantity located* Highway Research Department This department was organized to investigate the existing types of roadconstruction and to carry on research regarding new types and the suit-ability of different types to different locations. The work has included traffic census readings and wear measurementsof top-soil and sand-clay roads; investigations of surface treatments onsecondary highways; and the location of suitable material for all typesof highways except those of hard-surface design.
