The Collectors Guide, Delft China. In giving prominence to blue Staffordshire,many collectors have overlooked the charms ofDelft. The scarcity of old pieces partiallyaccounts for this lack of enthusiasm, and thefact that good specimens are seldom foundoutside of antique shops. Yet the Dutch warehas a ceramic history, which, by comparison,makes the oldest blue Staffordshire seem a rankparvenue, a history into which is woven thecommercial rise of Holland. About the end of the sixteenth century, theDutch, through trading with Japan, importedmany pieces of oriental china, and it was theirdesire to reproduce or imitate these that ledto the foundation of an industry destined togrow to immense proportions.
