. Bank rate and the money market in England, France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium, 1844-1900; . By Henry Ginsberg* ^T^ REATER prosperity ahead!^If All signs point to it. All ex-perts agree on it. General businessis on the upswing, and that is themost heartening news that couldpossibly come to Hollywoods the factories are humming;when the cars are rolling off theassembly lines; when Mr. Americais getting an adequate salary checkevery week, then there are boomtimes for motion pictures. It seems safe to predict that, barr-ing unforeseen developments, box-office business in general should bebetter by at least 20 per cent duringthe next six months. It is most proba-ble that for the entire year of 1939the final figures will disclose a sub-stantial gain over 1938. These conclusions are not based. on charts and graphs of the filmmarket itself. They come insteadfrom a study of general businessconditions. We know from this studythat the past year has seen a defi-nite upturn in industrial productionvolume, that increased employmentis in prospect as is a rising nationalincome. There are hopes that theproblem of the railroads and pub-lic utilities soon will be solved. This may seem to wander farafield from the primary problem withwhich motion picture companies areconcerned, which is, namely, to pro-vide entertainment. But when werealize that the entertainment ismade possible only by the dimesand quarters of working men andwomen, depending for their livingupon this modern business world,we can see that an upturn in anyline, from potato growing to sardinecanning, directly affects Hollywood. In several ways, mo-tion pictures ore at thecomplete mercy of theeconomic cycle. Manu-facturers of staple prod-ucts, in dull times, caneither close down orstore their goods until ahealthier market
