OPUNTIA KAFINESQUIANA (Engelmann).—This is the only species of Cactus hitherto Known which with-stands our severest winters without any protection whatever ; the more remarkable because of its being a species ofthe Indian Fig, which otherwise occurs only in warmer climates. The plant forms a prostrate, spreading mass ofobovate, flat, thick joints, which are dark green, perfectly smooth and spineless, flowering in July very handsomely,bright jellow, producing an abundance of red, fleshy fruits of a flavour very similar to Gooseberries, dfelicious aspreserves. Cfaildren are extremely fond of them. It is a native ot the Mississippi valley, Illinois, MissouH,Wisconsin.
