Atapuerca fossil excavation. Researchers carrying out excavations for human and animal fossils at the TD-4 level in the Gran Dolina site in the Sierra de Atapuerca foothills near Burgos, Spain. The Atapuerca fossil sites are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, containing the earliest human remains found in Europe (level TD-6). The TD-4 level (900,000 years old) contains evidence of human habitation (such as stone tools), but fewer fossils than in other layers. Animal fossils found here include a prehistoric jaguar jaw bone and various bear fossils.
