Now follows a succession ofbeautiful formations—Hymen Terrace, MinervaTerrace, a graceful series of basins, forty feet inheight, and covering an area of nearly three-quartersof an acre—Pulpit, White Elephant, Beauty Springs,Marble Terrace, and many others. From the back of White Elephant Terrace springsa tiny geyser, throwing its small fountain abouteighteen inches in the air. I think at first, its mis-sion is to cool the Elephants back, but when I learnthat its waters are boiling hot, I change my opinion,. The Yellowstone Park 305 and feel that the little geyser is to the Elephant whatthe vulture was to Prometheus. It is but a step farther to the Devils Kitchen,which is the crater of an extinct hot spring. Bymeans of a rude ladder, two of our party descendinto the kitchen, which is forty feet deep, twentyfeet wide at the base, and eighty feet long. It issaid that the bones of wild animals were found herewhen the crater was first explored, and that coloniesof bats now make it a place of resort. This doesnot add to ones comfort while walking about in thehot, stuffy atmosphere. The temperature is ninety-five degrees. We do not linger in this department ofHades, but are glad to escape and leave the Old Boyto work out his culinary operations in peace. The Orange Terrace is a brilliantly colored mound,receiving its gorgeous hues from the iron impregna-tions in the water which flows over it.
