Occasionally we 22 SIBERIA IN EUROPE. chap. hi. had slight snowstorms, but brilliant sunshine was the rule,and we found the clear, dry air most invigorating. had set in the weather became more cloudy, and thethermometer once registered 37° in the shade, jffo signs offrost having been visible by the 6th, we made hot haste tobe off before our winter road should break up, taking leaveof our kind friends, Mr. and Mrs. Birse, with great regret. Ithas rarely been our lot to be received with such genuinehospitality as was shown us by this estimable gentleman andhis OLD RUSSIAN SILVER CROSS.
