Before noticing Raffles/a Patma Blume, we should remarkthat Dr. Blume, in 1825, founded an order to receive this andallied plants, and devised for it the name Rhizantheae; fromrkize, a root, and ant/ios, a flower; in expression of the remark-able habit in their vegetation of their being flowers parasiticallysustained on the roots of other plants. As M. Brongniarthad, in 1824-, a year previous, applied the term Cytineae toplants of the same kind, Dr. Blumes name is superseded bythe priority ofM. Brongniarts. Dr. Blume, however, in hiswork before us, published in 1828, retains his own name ofRhizantheae, and under it developes, in considerable detail, itscharacters, before he proceeds to the contradistinction, de-scription, and illustration of the plants, which, in this work
