Vomiting is usually due to incomplete anes- thesia and the admixture of too much air with the vapor. The anesthetic must be persistently given until the vomiting ceases and complete relaxation occurs. The mucus should be constantly wiped from the patient's mouth. The pupils should remain con- tracted all through etherization, and dilate when the patient is returning to consciousness. Dilated pupils mean one of two things: either that the patient is com- ing out of the anesthetic influence, or that she is too deeply anesthetized. We can readily ascertain which condition the patient is in by pouring a little ether into the cone. If she is coming out, she will cough, stop breathing, and give other signs of discomfort;.
