Activists protest in Times Square in New York the 2 year sentence of the three members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, on Friday, August 17, 2012. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich, members of the band, have been held in pre-trial detention since March of this year after protesting against Russian President Putin via an unauthorized performance in the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow. Judge Marina Syrova sentenced them for hooliganism today in Moscow to 2 years with the sentence commencing at the time of their arrest. (© Frances M. Roberts)
