The Temple of Khnum at Esna. Discovered below street level this image shows the wall of the temple and the town houses above


The temple at Esna is dedicated to the ram headed God Khnum, the God of the Nile, Neith, the Goddess of War, Heka, the Goddess of Magic, and Menhet the Lion Goddess. This is a Ptolemaic temple, variously built by the roman emperor Claudius (41-54AD) through to Decius (249-251AD), and their names are recorded all over the Temple walls. Discovered below street level and then excavated over many years this image shows the rear wall of the temple and the houses of the town of Esna high above
