In the males with the eyes touching the vertex and frons are elongately triangular, and when the eyes are only approximate, vertex and frons are narrowly connected; in the females the frons forms a narrow band from the ocelli to the antennae; vertex, frons and epistoma are not raised above the level of the eyes in Pipunculus, but in Cha- larus and Verrallia vertex and epistoma are a little raised and are therefore seen in these two genera, when the head is viewed in profile, but not in Pipunculus (figs. 1 and 2). As the family belongs to the Aschiza there is no frontal bladder nor bladder-seam, neither is any 1.
