Fort Davis, Texas - An exhibit in the visitor center at Fort Davis National Historic Site illustrates the fort's role in guarding emigrants and stagecoaches on the San Antonio-El Paso Road in the last half of the 19th century. Named after Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, who became president of the Confederate States during the Civil War, the fort was opened in 1854 and closed in 1891.
