All boiler-roomsshould be supplied with atleast two feed pumps, sothat if one breaks downthere may always be an-other one available. The injector is a reliableboiler feeder, and is in factmore economical than thesteam pump, because theheat in the steam used isall returned to the boiler, excepting the losses by radiation. But the disad-vantage attending the use of the injector is that it willnot work well with the feed water at a temperaturevery much in excess of ioo° F., while a good steampump, fitted with hard rubber valves, will handle waterat a temperature as high as 200 ° or 208° F., when thewater flows to the pump by gravity from a heater, orit will raise water from a receiving tank on a shortsuction lift at a temperature of 1500 or 1600 F. Feed Water Heaters. One great source of economy. AUTOMATIC INJECTOR. 52 ENGINEERING in fuel is the utilization of all the available exhauststeam for heating the feed water before it enters theboiler. Of course if the main engine is a condensingengine, the exhaust from that source is not directlyavailable, except by interposing a closed heaterbetween the cylinder and the condenser, or by using
