Our landing place was a spit 700 ft. wide and 8 ft. high, beyond which is a salty lake, the eastern end of which we could see but the western end was lost to sight behind a bend to the Here and there on the spit there was grass 1 ?? ft. tall. Moderate gale; bright; thick clouds on the horizon; heavy break- ers. At 8:00, 20 Kivalinagmiut men approached us. The northern lights began at 10:00 and continued till midnight, with weather.
