The Drunkard from Mechel's "Triumph of Death" 1860
On the right, a festive Death pulls back a drunk's head and pours a flagon of red wine down his throat as his companions look on and cheer. At front, another drunk vomits on the floor, and a third drunk at left is seen deep in his cups. Handcoloured engraving from Chretien Mechel's "La Triomphe de la Mort" (The Triumph of Death) published in 1860 in Stuttgart. It is believed that Mechel's engravings were not after Holbein, but after sketches by a young Peter Paul Rubens (1577~1640).
