Guaiacum syphilis treatment. 16th-century illustration of a syphilis patient (left) in Europe being treated with a drug prepared from the guaiacum tree. This plant had been recently discovered in subtropical and tropical regions of the Americas. Resin from the tree was used to treat the venereal disease syphilis. The preparation of the drug is shown at right, while the contraction of the disease is shown in the panel on the wall at centre. This artwork, titled 'Hyacum et Lues Venerea', dates from circa 1570. The engraving is by Philipp Galle (1537-1612), after the original painting by Johannes Stradanus (1523-1605, also known as Giovanni Stradano or Jan Van der Straet).
