Some of theexperiments were rather striking, particularlythat of raising a fifty-six pound weight, by theupward pressure of the atmosphere. Therewas also a water-pump with a glass barrel, anda syphon. The whole were packed in a neatcase, which might be carried under the 74 MEMOIR OF A MECHANIC. A lithographic print, showing how the variousarticles were to be used, was pasted under thecover of each case; and an explanatory pamph-let was also sent with each set of
