Asnothing has been said about the graineaten by the Calantians, various emenda-tions have been proposed. Valckenaerwould read στιματι for σπΐρματι, Wessel-ing €ρ•γματί. Hence Larchers cou-tumes a Iegard dcs morts, and Langes Todtenbranche. But there seems to beno sufficient reason for departing fromthe reading of the MSS. The grain in-tended is probably rice. 3 This notion probably arose fromtheir having mud huts, so common incentral Africa, and was the origin of thestory and name of the Troglodytae, wholived between Nubia and the Red [G. W.] * They not only brought logs ofebony, with other ornamental woodsand elephants teeth, as tribute to thePharaohs, bvit used ebony clubs inbattle (No. II.) which exactly resemble.
