Thepeculiarity of Venezuela—it seems apeculiarity in comparison with Aus-tralia—is the perennial joy of run-ning streams. In the rainy seasonevery valley, every cleft between twohills, shows its little river. Manyare perennial, and there is no scarcityof water. The Orinoco is the greatarterial drain of the major portion ofthe country. It is always a greatriver, but during the height of thewet season it rises from 60 to 80feet above the normal summer in Venezuela there are, in asense, none, except near the chiefcities. There are horse tracks bywhich a traveler finds his way fromone flooded river to the next one, andthese rivers he must cross, as besthe can, on fallen trees, over whichhe carries his baggage, while his VENEZUELA 227. horses swim. Yet mostly theseflooded rivers are small, and wouldbe easily spanned by a few simplerolled steel girders. Bigger riverscould be crossed by chain is room for light railways, which could be built, in all save therails, from the timber and stonealongside the route. In the earlystages of development, especially inthe back lands, a monorail system, with the crossbar supported by thetraction quadrupled, would serve lacks all these things, andall articles of common use are dearbecause of this, and excessive tariffs, and other things that might beavoided and eliminated. Of allcountries in South America theArgentine Republic seems to havetaken first hold on the imaginationof the British capitalist. Yet Argen-tina cannot compare with Venezuelain fertility, climate or rivers, nor isshe so rich in minerals; for in Venezuela there are coal, petroleum, iron, copper and gold. Venezuelawould yield far better returns thanArgentina if helped
