Macrophotograph showing a petri dish culture of Trichosporon cutaneum, a fungal parasite that infects the scalp and beard of man causing a disease known as piedra. The fungus grows in dense clumps, forming a hard white mass along the hair shaft. The white variety is specific to temperate regions, whereas in the tropics a black form is found called Piedraia hortai.
