Veria or, Bepoia, or Veroia was probably populated as early as 1,000 BC and was an important possession of Philip II of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great) and later of the Roman Empire. The Apostle Paul preached in the city and its inhabitants were among the Empire's first Christians. Under the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, Veria was a centre of Greek culture and learning.
