It waswhilst Mary was on horseback, enjoying the sports of the field, in this neighbourhood,that she received the messenger who communicated the discovery of her guilt. Theannouncement of the fatal intelligence which Sir Thomas Gorges conveyed, suddenlyextinguished the fond expectations which had been so long cherished. She instantlydirected her horses head homewards; but was not permitted to return thither. She wasconveyed to Fotheringay—the last sad scene of her eventful HELMINGHAM HALL, SUFFOLK.
