Their effect is one of greatbenefit to the unity of the Exposition matter what the type of building, whethersimple Mission or belligerent Baroque, theselong, apparently endless avenues, extend alongall the buildings in rhythmic foreshortening intoendless distances. They make one content withthe generally more or less strenuous work ofExposition wanderings, and even if the excep-tional should occur and the heavens send downtheir refreshing showers, they are again thehaven of refuge, without limiting one to a singlespot. After some time spent in the intimacy of thearcades, one might be tempted to do justice tothe many buildings representing the States of [56]. THE PIGEONS ON THE PLAZA DE PANAMA THE BUILDINGS the Union. Starting on the Plaza in front ofthe organ, to the right the Via de los Estadosleads to a number of buildings which in theirway have tried to fit into the scheme of things,with much success when one considers the factthat they were designed by different men, indifferent parts of the continent, outside of thecontrol of the Supervising Architect. The Wash-ington State Building assumes a gaiety barelysuggestive of its Mission origin. An originalfeature of the building, successfully managed, isthe many window openings which penetrate theouter walls. A little further along on the leftthe Montana Building impresses by its verydignified fagade. An air of the secludedness ofthe Mission, from which it too has the generaloutline, is evident in this bui
