A Black Live Matter protest for Belgium student, Sanda Dia by Moments Contained, a four-meter-high statute of a black women dressed in jogging pants and trainers looking out over Rotterdam’s Stationsplein, the statute is by British artist Thomas J Price. Black Lives Matter and others, gathered outside Rotterdam’s busy Stationsplein this afternoon, for Sanda Dia, a twenty-year old Belgium university student of colour, who met his death at a fraternity initiation ceremony known as Reuzegom in 2018. The ceremony was tantamount to torcher, in which two other students also participated. Mr. Dia was subjected to: the drinking of fish oil, large amounts of gin, spending hours in a pit filled with ice-cold water, where he was fed live goldfish and blended mice. Mr. Dia had collapsed and was eventually taken to hospital where he died of a heart attack two days later. The coroner’s report found that toxic salt levels caused by the excessive amounts of fish oil had led to his death. Four years later, the 18 or so students, received a sentence of 300 hours community service and fine of €400 ($430; £340) each. The trail conclusion, that Mr. Dia’s death was involuntary and was also subjected to degrading treatment. The members were ordered to pay damages to Mr Dia’s family, including the two others who were also subject to the hazing initiation. It has been suggested that race and class played a part in the treatment of Mr. Dia.
