View NE from Conwy marina across the estuary to the twin peaks of Deganwy Castle (Castell Degannwy), North Wales, UK. The twin hills have been a focus for settlement since at least the post-Roman period. Maelgwyn Gwynedd had a court there in the C6th, traditionally the site of the first eisteddfod. The Norman Robert of Rhuddlan built a castle in 1080 but the site was soon regained by the Welsh & nothing remains of his work. Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, ruler of all Gwynedd by 1200, rebuilt the castle in 1213. The English overran it in 1245 but found the castle largely destroyed by the Welsh. Henry III constructed a new castle 1245-54, with towers on each hill & a bailey on the saddle; it was never finished, but these are the remains we see today. Llywelyn ap Gruffudd laid siege to the castle, captured it in 1263 & largely destroyed it. Henry's son Edward I camped in the ruins of Deganwy in 1283 & started to build his castle on the other side of the river at Conwy to control the estuary crossing.
