The line may then be moved ahead. Set all posts two and one-half feet in the ground,185 186 THE TRACKMANS HELPER and have the men who are digging make marks ontheir shovels by which to determine the correctdepth of the postholes, and thus have all the postsof a uniform height above the ground. A good wayto save sighting along straight track is to set a postevery ten or fifteen rods with a temporary brace, andstretch one wire of the fence to use as a guide. When putting on wires, if you are not furnished awire stretcher, they may be tightened by taking aturn around a lining bar. Stick the point of the bar. ■^■-^.k Fig. 34. Fence Corner in the ground diagonally from you, and pull the topof bar towards you and downward. In this way youcan take up the slack. Always put the wire on the farmers side of thefence posts. A good brace should be put in at the endof each piece of fence, or at any point where the fenceturns an angle, also at gates and cattle guards. SeeFigs. 34 and 35. Mortice one end of the brace into the top of thecorner post, and the other end into the bottom of thepost adjoining, where it enters the ground. Provide BUILDING FENCES 187 a board with notches cut into it at distances equal tothe proper spaces between the wires. The wires maybe hung- in the notches, and the board will keep themin position while they are being fastened to the posts. Have the men well organized. Divide a gang ofsixteen about as follows: Assign two men to lay outthe fence, six to dig post holes, four to set the posts
