They are eminent laymen who love theChurch, are honored by it and are an honor to it. * * * * One of the impressive and helpful services ofthe Conference was the morning prayer service,conducted each morning at the Battery ParkHotel by the laymen who were stopping morning from 7:00 to 8:00 oclock themen met in a large room assigned for the pur-pose and it was a benediction to attend and hearthe earnest words and fervent prayers and testi-monies of the brethren. S. NOTES AND PERSONALS,. —It will be sad news to many readers of theAdvocate to learn that Hon. W. H. Bower passedaway at his home in Lenoir on Thurs., May ^ Bower had been in ill health for a numberof years, having had a stroke of paralysissome years ago, from which he never fullyrecovered. He had several strokes, the lastand fatal one occurring on Thursday beforehis death. For many years he was prominentin politics, and was a lawyer of great was solicitor of his district for severalyears, and served one term as representativeof the eighth district in Congress. He was amember of the Methodist Church, He leavesa wife and one son, also an aged mother andtwo sisters. May the Lord greatly comfortthe bereaved ones. —The article printed on our first page lastweek referring to the first issue of the Advocatein 1855, was written by Rev. W.
