The steam connection to the column shouldbe well drained, either to the boiler or to the column. If valvesare used in the connections they should show, in an unmistakableway, whether they are open or shut. The steam connection to a water column is often made withbends and elbows thus providing no facilities for inspection. Eventhough the steam connection is not liable to scale or becomeblocked, it is certainly safer and more in line with good operating practice to he able to. know positively that the steam branch isclear.
