Urban beachcomber statue in Paseo de Pereda, PuertoChico, Santander, Cantabria, Spain.

This is a statue of a 'raquero' in Paseo Pereda. Raqueros were the poor or marginalized children, generally orphans, who frequented the docks of the bay of Santander and who survived on the basis of petty theft and by getting coins from passengers and ship crews who threw coins into the sea while waiting that the little ones get them back. The rakers threw themselves into the sea, dived until they found the coins and came out again with their little treasures.
