Lieutenant Slemmersreport says of Lieutenant Gilman:During the whole affair we havestood side by side, and if any credit isdue for the course pursued, he is en-titled to it equally with myself. Thedemand was refused, and Fort Pickens. never passed into the hands of theConfederates. The battery seen inthis photograph was at Warrington, nearly opposite Fort Pickens. It com-manded the entrance to the Pendleton, who was a grad-uate of West Point in the class of1830, was chief of artillery in Leesarmy of Northern Virginia. He en-tered the war as captain in the ar-tillery corps July 19, 1861, andbecame colonel and chief of artil-lery July 21, 1861. The mortar inthis photograph is an old stylepiece dating from before the Mexican war. The new Confederatesoldiers had at times to contentthemselves with very old guns. BRIGADIER-GENERAL W. N.
