The boats, twelve in number, which wereprovided by the King, left the Residency, whichat this period of the year is approachable bywater, the day before our departure, and Hardingand myself, accompanied by Macaulaj^, rode into Lialui to meet them. Lewanika had prepared an excellent luncheonfor us, and seemed genuinely touched at thethought of our departure. He adjured me totake care of myself, promised to write (throughhis interpreter), and I agreed to answer his letterwhen we arrived at Kakengis.
