So thestory grew, and Wood accordingly begins his pedigree ofthe Boyds with the said Simon, and on the strength ofthis the descent has been accepted by subsequent Walter the Steward had a brother Simon, and thathe witnessed the foundation charter of Paisley in 1160 asSimon, frater Walteri filii Allani, is not disputed, but thischarter was executed, not at Paisley, but at Fotheringay ? Round appears to prove conclusively that this Simonwas only uterine brother of Walter, and that he was theSimon de Oaisneto alias de Norfolc, who held the Manorof Mileham. Were Nisbets statement, that the firstrecorded Robert Boyd is designed nephew of Walter theSteward in the Cartulary of Paisley capable of proof, thenit would establish the connection, though not necessarily adescent from Simon, but no such entry is to be found, and,without further evidence in support of it, this descent can-not be accepted. The first reliable information we have ofthe family is as vassals of the de Morvilles in the regalityof Largs, and it may be that their progenitor accompaniedthe first de M
