Super typhoon Chanchu approaching the south coast of China on 16th May 2006. The coast of Vietnam runs down left. Over 600,000 people were evacuated in southern China as the storm approached. Chanchu is only the second storm to be categorised as a super typhoon in the South China Sea since records began, after Ryan in 1995. Chanchu had sustained winds of over 250 kilometres per hour, and a central eye pressure of 910 millibars. The high winds and flooding caused the deaths of 41 people in the Philippines, before it reached super typhoon strength after moving back over the sea and heading to China, where it killed at least 21 more.
