Rafah, Occupied Territories, Gaza Strip, Palestine, Israel, Ikonos satellite image. North is at top. Rafah has a population of 96,000, around half of whom are refugees living in two camps: Canada Camp towards the north and Rafah Camp to the south. The long straight line running vertically to the left of centre marks the border with Egypt. Since violence between the Israelis and Palestinians resumed in September 2000, Rafah has been used to smuggle in weapons through tunnels from Egypt. The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has demolished large areas of the town, making thousands of people homeless. Photographed on 21 April 2000.
