Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fracture through the jawbone (grey) and periodontal ligament around the root of a tooth. The periodontal ligament is made up of collagen fibre (brown) bundles known as Sharpey's fibres. These fibres anchor the root of the tooth to the jawbone. At upper centre is an osteoblast (bone producing cell, yellow). The picture was created as part of a cooperation with Quintessenz Publishing. Magnification: x1,800 when printed at 15cm wide.
