Mount Etna. Simulated 3D high-altitude panoramic view of Mount Etna, Italy, viewed from the south. Image based on Landsat satellite images and detailed digital terrain data. Etna is Europe's most active volcano, shown here during the eruption of July 2001. Landsat's thermal infrared channel has been used to show the extent of hot, fresh lava flows. Older flows show as dark areas on the volcano's flanks. Etna dominates the eastern end of the island of Sicily, and towers above the port of Catania (foreground centre). In the distance, a chain of islands includes the active volcanoes of Stromboli and Vulcano.
