Cataract surgery. Image 3 of 6. Patient undergoing cataract surgery. A probe (top) is about to be inserted into the lens chamber. This emits high frequency sound (ultrasound) which breaks up the lens, allowing it to be sucked out through the probe, a process known as phacoemulsification. A prosthetic lens will replace the removed one. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is extremely common in old age, causing a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness. For a series showing the surgical procedure, see images M570/186 - M570/191.
