We have Mr. Pells stately old coach, which has seats forsix passengers inside, and ample room for four servants carry no trunks, our wrarclrobes being stored in the capaciousboxes under the seats. Four horses draw us over the level plain ;more are added in climbing hills. The driver has two assistants orrunners (lopers), who, by constantly applying their lashes, keep theponies up to running-speed. They are whisked off and replaced atstages of seven miles. We made the journey in three hours. Ateach stage, the traveller pays four cents to each loper, and ten ortwenty cents to the driver.
