MORE, Sir Thomas, chancellor ofEngland, the son of a judge, was born, in1480, in Milk Street, Luiidon, and waseducated in the family of Cardinal jMorton, who used to predict Mores future emi-nence. He completed his studies at ChristChurch, then Canterbury Cidlege, Oxford, and at Lincolns Inn He early obtaineda seat in parliament, and on more thanone occasion displayed an independentspirit. This high office he filled fothree years with the utmost talent andintegrity. He resigned the seals, becausehe could not conscientiously lend his sup-port to the measures of Henry with respectto religion and the divorce of Catherineof Arragon. For this, the implacabletyrant devoted him to death, and he wasbeheaded in 1535. His humour and pleas-antry did not desert him even in his lastmoments. The virtue of tolerance wasalone wanting to render More an almostperfect character. Of his works the mostcelebrated is the Utopia, a political ro-mance. MORE, Henry, a divine and platonicphilosopher, was born, in 1614, at Grant-ham; was educated at Eton, and ChristsCollege, Cambridge; refused the highestpreferments ; and died, universally be-loved, in 1687.
