Rock sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus, close-up from the Mediterranean Sea. Picture was taken in Cirkewwa, Malta.
The rock sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus, is known as rock sea urchin or purple sea urchin, although coloration can vary. These grazers are commonly found in the eastern Atlantic and throughout the Mediterranean Sea. They feed on sea grass and different types of algae. During the day they usually hide in rock crevices and small pools. Reproduction happens through spawning of female and males, whereby eggs and sperms are simultaneously released into the water column.
