Torquay is a seaside town in Devon, England, part of the area of town's economy was initially based upon fishing and agriculture; however, in the early 19th century, it began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort. Later, as the town's fame spread, it was popular with Victorian society. Renowned for its mild climate, the town earned the nickname the English Riviera. This tithe barn's place in the history books was firmly established at the time of the Spanish Armada, when the Rosario was among the first of the Spanish fleet to come to grief. A total of 397 prisoners were captured by Sir Francis Drake and were held in the barn for a fortnight
