Goniatite fossil. Fossilised shell of a goniatite (Goniatites sp.) The goniatites were one of the primitive ammonoids which are found as fossils in Devonian and Carboniferous strata (dating from 395-345 & 345-280 million years ago respectively). Ammonites were marine molluscs with a coiled shell and distinct head and mouth region surrounded by tentacles. They are similar in appearance to the modern day nautilus. The last ammonites became extinct in the Upper Cretaceous Period, about 65 million years ago. The size of this fossil is approx. 50mm.
