This cavity Fig. 44. contains the pulp of the tooth, and is furnishedwith blood vessels and nerves through the smallopenings at the ends of the roots. This is shownin Figure 44. The solid part of the tooth iscomposed of three different substances: the ivory,or tooth bone (called also the dentine); the enamel, which covers the crown; and the cement, whichcovers the root and sets it in its socket. If chipped off, or eaten through by decay, the tooth soonrots and aches. Being mainly composed of lime, it is readily corrodedor softened by anything that is sour. The constant use of acidfruits or fluids, as also of very hot or very cold foods or drinks, unlessgreat caution be exercised, is injurious. But, by far the greatestsource of injury lies in the fermentation of particles of food indo-lently left between the teeth. For this reason, the habit should beformed of rinsing the mouth and picking the teeth (but onlywith a quill, ivory, tortoise shell or gold pick), after each enamel is sometimes observed to change in color with the stateof the health. Thus, in bilious people it turns yellow, and inconsumptive people it occasionally becomes of an unnatural pearlywhiteness. Receipts for the care of the enamel, by tooth powdersand mouth washes, we give later on in their place in the work; forthe page consult the index. The teeth
