Even in thosecases where a former discharge from the ear cannot beremembered, there is, doubtless, a number to be classedin this group, because many people are ignorant of anotitis that has run its course in childhood. That suchdeposits occur in the course of chronic catarrh of the mid-dle ear is well known. But it can only be determinedwith certainty that such is the origin, when the formationof the deposit has been observed during life. So far as Iknow, Moos, of Heidelberg, was the first to observe theformation of calcareous deposits in the membrana tym-pani. This occurred in an old woman seventy years ofage, in the course of a chronic catarrh of the middle ear, without secretion and perforation of the that communication I have also had an oppor-tunity, in two similar cases, of following up the develop- 60 Memhrcma ment of these deposits. Scliwartze also observed theirincrease in several cases. 2. During the examination of a very large number ofpersons of normal hearing, in several cases I met withcalcareous deposits in the membranes, such as are foundafter old otorrhoeas. Fig. 1 of the accompanying sketches (PL II., Fig. 9)is an illustration of the right membrana tympani of —ch, a student, on which a largecrescentic, chalky white deposit is tobe seen in front of the manubrium, be-hind it a smaller, irregular, polygonalone, which strongly contrast with thebluish gray color of the other parts ofthe membrane. Several oblong reflec-tions of light are seen at the lower end of the to his own and his mothers statement, noaffection of his ear had ever been noticed.
